CIS and Eastern EuropeRepatriation to Tajikistan and repatriation to Germany
A repatriation to Tajikistan calls for care with the flight route and documents: the apostille does not apply in relations with Germany, and Tajik documents can neither be legalised nor verified by the German side. We organise coffin transport to Dushanbe and the repatriation of the deceased from Tajikistan to Germany.

Repatriation from Germany to Tajikistan
We collect the deceased anywhere in Germany, apply for the death certificate and body passport (Leichenpass), and arrange hygienic preparation and placement in a soldered zinc-lined coffin for air freight. Depending on the flight schedule, the freight usually travels with a transfer at a hub. We check the connection daily and inform the family in Dushanbe of the arrival time.
Tajikistan acceded to the Apostille Convention in 2015, but Germany lodged an objection in due time – the apostille therefore does not apply between the two states. German documents for Tajik authorities are therefore generally legalised; we clarify the details with the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Berlin, which is responsible for the whole of Germany. For Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein there is also an honorary consul in Hamburg. We clarify before departure which preliminary certifications and translations into Tajik or Russian are required.
If the home town is in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region or near the Afghan border, caution is advised: the German Federal Foreign Office strongly advises against travel to all areas near the border with Afghanistan, and in the Pamirs mudslides can block roads in summer. We therefore coordinate onward transport from Dushanbe closely with the family.

Death in Tajikistan – repatriation to Germany
After a death in Tajikistan, the medical certificate of death (Шаҳодатномаи вафот) is issued first. With it, relatives or the funeral director apply to the civil registry office (ZAGS) for the official death certificate, which is usually issued in Tajik and Russian within one to three days. Staff rarely speak English; Tajik or Russian is necessary. In the case of a sudden or unaccompanied death, the public prosecutor or criminal police prepare a report before the deceased is released.
Embalming is mandatory for repatriation. Required are the death certificate or medical certificate of death, a certificate from the health inspectorate confirming the embalming, and a customs permit; sometimes the authorities ask for a letter from the embassy stating that there are no objections to the repatriation. The body passport (Leichenpass) for Germany can be issued by the German Embassy in Dushanbe.
An important point for the time after the burial in Germany: the German Embassy in Dushanbe has not legalised Tajik documents since 1999, and since July 2019 document verification in Tajikistan has also not been possible. German authorities decide at their own discretion in assessing the evidence whether they recognise a Tajik death certificate. Obtaining documents from Tajikistan afterwards via the embassy takes about six months on average. You should therefore obtain several copies of the death certificate on site straight away.

Good to know: funeral customs and particularities in Tajikistan
More than 90 per cent of people in Tajikistan are Muslims, most of whom follow the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam. Three to four per cent are Ismaili Shiites, mainly in Gorno-Badakhshan. Christians and Muslims are buried in separate cemeteries, and a burial requires prior approval from the cemetery administration. Religious and cultural wishes are agreed with the administration in advance.
The climate is continental, with dry, hot summers. Together with the wish of Muslim families for a swift burial, this means that decisions between burial on site and repatriation often have to be made within a few hours. We advise you even at night, in German, Russian or English, and tell you frankly which option is realistic.
Urn transfer to Tajikistan
There are no cremation facilities in Tajikistan. An urn transfer is therefore only an option if the deceased was cremated in Germany. Whether a cemetery in Tajikistan will accept an urn and which certificates are required for import must be clarified in advance with the family, the cemetery administration and the Tajik embassy in Berlin; legalised German documents are generally required for this. We take care of this coordination and tell you beforehand whether this route is possible.

Frequently asked questions about Tajikistan
Your question isn’t here? Call us – we will answer right away.
All questionsDo I need an apostille or legalisation for Tajikistan?
As a rule, legalisation. Germany objected to Tajikistan's accession to the Apostille Convention, so the apostille does not apply between the two states. We clarify the details of the legalisation in advance with the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Berlin.
Are there direct flights from Germany to Dushanbe?
Non-stop connections have existed only at times; whether one is currently available depends on the flight schedule. The coffin is usually carried with a transfer at a hub. We check the connection afresh for every repatriation.
Is a Tajik death certificate recognised in Germany?
The German Embassy has not legalised Tajik documents since 1999, and document verification has not been possible since 2019. German authorities decide at their own discretion in assessing the evidence. Several original copies and a certified translation make the process easier.
Can a deceased person be cremated in Tajikistan?
No, there is no cremation in Tajikistan. The deceased is either buried locally or repatriated to Germany in a coffin; embalming is mandatory for this.
How much does repatriation from Tajikistan to Germany cost?
The price depends on the place of death, embalming, the freight route and the destination in Germany. Before you decide, you will receive a written fixed-price quote from us. The German mission abroad cannot cover or advance any costs.
